#2 Proverbs 2:1 &5 (ESV)

1.If you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you,

5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

문법포인트#2
영어문장의 종류를 "절(Clause)"이 어떻게 연결되어 있는지에 따라서 1) Simple Sentences 2) Compound Sentences 3) Complex Sentences 이렇게 세개로 나눕니다. 미국 중고등학생 시험문제에도 이것을 가려는 문제가 자주 나올 정도로 문법에서 중요한 개념이에요. Simple Sentence는 독립절 하나만 있고 종속절이 전혀 없는 문장이에요. I love you. 이런것이죠. Compound Sentences는 두개의 독립절들이 연결되어 있는 것이에요. I love you and you love me. 세번째로 Complex Sentences는 종속절과 독립절이 연결되어 있는 것인데 I love you because you are my child.와 같지요. 제가 아주 간단한 문장으로 예를 들었지만, 좀더 복잡한 문장이 나오면 네이티브로 자란 아이들도 헷깔려하기 쉽답니다. 그런데 센텐스 다이아그래밍으로 훈련된 학생들이 이것을 파악하는 능력이 저절로 익혀질수 밖에 없어요.
위 잠언 문장은 세종류중에 무엇일까요? 3)이죠. if라는 종속절이 있으니까요. if같은 것을 subordinating conjunction이라고 불러요. 센텐스 다이어그램할때는 종속절을 아래 두게 됩니다. 그래서 5절을 1절 보다 위에 쓴 것이에요. 그리고 동사와 동사를 점선으로 이어주고 그 위에 if와 같은 접속사를 써주게 됩니다. (The word if is a subordinating conjunction, which connects an dependent clause and a main clause. Place the main clause first and then the dependent clause below it. That is why I put Verse 5 above Verse 1. Connect the verbs with a dotted line and write "if"sideways on the line. )

잠언 2장 1절 "나의 말을...나의 명령을 받는 것은...."에서 대명사 "나"는 솔로몬 왕을 지칭합니다. 그는 고대 역사에서 지혜로운 왕들중에 하나로 알려져 있지요. 그는 잠언의 상당부분을 집필했습니다. 오늘 말씀에서 그의 말을 받아들인다는 것은 그의 명령들을 보물 다루듯 간직하라는 말이라고 설명하네요. 솔로몬은 인생에서 성공도 많았고, 또 실패도 있었습니다. 그런 경험이 많은 인생 코치가 우리에게 진정한 지혜의 원천이 누구인지 토닥이며 말해줍니다.

기도: 주님, 인생의 스승들이 인내심있게 저에게 가르쳐 줄때, 제게 겸손한 마음을 주시고 듣게해주세요.

In Proverbs 2:1 “if you received my words...my commandment” the pronoun my refers to King Solomon, one of the wisest kings of ancient history. He wrote the most parts of Proverbs in the Bible. The verse says that receiving his words equals to treasuring his commandments. Having lots of success and failure, he, a seasoned life teacher, gently reminds us of the true source of wisdom. Prayer: Lord, when my life teachers patiently teach me, give me a humble heart and listen.
